Cold Weather; Warm Furnace
Guess what, it’s almost winter. Not bad though given that it’s November and we’ve had a few 70 degree days already this month. We’ll take that for Minnesota. As the land we love continues to cool and the frost begins to rear it’s ugly face, we’d like to help prepare you for the cold weather.

Fall Prep - Do this right now:
Clear debris away from your furnace: As your furnace begins to run more often, make sure that you remove any debris or potentially flammable objects away from the burner. This seems like a no brainer, however, house fires happen every year because of furnaces catching fire. Be safe, remove any debris near the furnace.
Evaluate your ductwork: If you can, check your ductwork for holes or leaks. Your ductwork plays a crucial role in the delivery of warm air to your home. Any leaks or damages could cost you as much as 20% of your energy bill. Along with any leaks or holes, it’s also important to have the ducts cleaned every few years. This will clean the dirt, dust, or mold that collects in the ducts, providing your home with better air quality.
Test your furnace: Before the cold days of winter arrive, turn on your furnace to test how it’s working. This will prepare you for any fixes that may need to be made to the unit, prior to the below-freezing weather arriving.
Winter Prep - Do this right now too:
Change your filters: Changing your filters, as we’ve talked about before, can lead to better airflow and quality of air. A clean filter allows for the most optimum running of your furnace, and prevents engine burnout.
Calibrate your thermostats: This is often done by a trained technician, but you can calibrate your thermostat so that winter efficiency is maxed. Also, it’s a good idea to keep your home heated to a minimum of 68 degrees in the winter to help prevent pipes from freezing.
