A Quick Plumbing Checklist for Your New House

When you think you've found your next home and you're ready to start signing, that's the best time to get a plumbing inspection. While there are some clauses that protect your interests if you find out too late that there's something very wrong with the plumbing, it's better to know beforehand. 

4 things you should do once you move in:

GET AN INSPECTION IF YOU DIDN'T DO IT BEFORE.

It's never too late to get an inspection and learn more about your house. In fact, now that it's all yours, it's even more important to know your home's plumbing quirks and any developing problems. 

TURN THE MAIN WATER LINE ON AND OFF.

Sooner or later, you'll have to turn the water off to your home. A cracked frozen pipe, a slow leak, and even a dead water heater are all times when the whole system has to stop. Find where your home's water main is before that happens. If your city allows you to, practice opening the grate and turning it off. The mechanism is relatively simple once you know how it feels, but the last thing you want to do is learn how to operate a new tool in the middle of a catastrophe.

TURN ALL OF THE LOCAL LINES ON AND OFF.

Most of your home's fixtures will have smaller turn-off points for your water. Find the valves under your sinks, in your laundry room, and by your water heater and toilets. It's important to both know where they are and be sure they can turn easily without any hard water buildup getting in the way.

LISTEN FOR WATER HAMMER.

Your first week in your new house is going to be busy. But set time aside during the first few loads of dishes or laundry to listen to the pipes. If you hear banging, find a local plumber who can quickly come fix the source of the problem.
