3 Things To Do Before Turning Your Air Conditioner On For The First Time This Season (If you haven’t already)

We realize this isn’t likely, but maybe you haven’t turned on your air conditioner yet (is it broken? Do you like sweating in your home? Are you trying to save money?). Whatever your reasoning, this blog post is for you!

The first thing you’ll want to do - once you determine enough is enough - is just to  turn on your air conditioner. While this idea is common, it’s very important that you do a few things before you actually turn it on for the first time of the season. Here are three things to make sure you do.

INSPECT YOUR OUTDOOR UNIT

Before you turn your air conditioning unit on for the season, it is important that you take the time to inspect your outdoor unit. First of all, you want to make sure that any and all coverings that were put on the unit, to protect it during the winters months, are removed. You should then check the panels of the unit to make sure all are in place and are in good condition. If you notice that the panels are dirty, don't hesitate to hose them off and remove any dirt and/or debris on them.

CHECK THE DUCT WORK

Take the time to look at all of your exposed ducts and see if there is any damage to them. This could be to the duct itself, or to the protective casing around the duct. This damage may be caused by weathering, animals, or even accidentally by humans. Taking the time to repair or replace the duct or the covering before turning on your air conditioner can save you from wasting a great deal of energy and can ensure that you don't have bigger problems later on.

REPLACE THE AIR FILTER

Next, you will want to head inside to replace your air filters. These air filters are likely quite dirty from the last season, so replacing them will ensure that your new air filters are up to the task of properly filtering your air. This not only increases the efficiency of your air filter, but it also helps to keep the air coming out of your vents clean and safe to breath in.
